Signs are great sources of promotion because, unlike other forms of advertisement, there aren’t monthly or yearly recurring costs. However, signs don’t last forever. Sometimes, they need an update!
There might be value in keeping an old pair of weathered sweatpants. You wouldn’t wear them outside the house, but they’re comfortable, so who care if the ends are frayed and there’s a small hole in the knee? Maybe you have an old watch that doesn’t work anymore, but it was your grandfather’s, so you keep it for sentimental reasons. All of this is fine and as a society we should all try to reduce the waste we produce, e.g., you don’t need a new mobile phone with every new update to the product line.
However, signage is different. If you manage a business in Plattsburgh, Champlain, or elsewhere in the North Country of New York, your signage reflects your business. And it does so 24/7. You can’t afford to have weathered or damaged signage hanging off the front of your building. Nor can you have signage that displays outdated information. Every corporate rebrand, every policy change, and every alteration to your marketing strategy requires new and updated signs.
You must keep a close eye on your business and commercial signage. These signs are constantly selling your business and they can’t do that effectively if they’re past their best beyond date. If the 20-year old channel letter sign at the front of your Plattsburgh bowling alley is falling apart and now says “B LING AL Y”. that’s a problem. But make sure to look for less obvious ones. Have the colors on the acrylic sign in your Champlain business weathered? Maybe your company colors are bright yellow and red and your decades-old acrylic sign now seems to be more of an orange and brown; that needs an update.
